Nigerian musician Wizkid said he would make old politicians in Nigeria leave power in the upcoming 2023 elections.
Wizkid commented in an interview with the UK-based publication The Guardian.
He urged Nigerians to speak up against people in government saying, “I’m about to go crazy on their asses this election. All these old men are going out of power this time. They need to go to an old people’s home and chill out.”
The Grammy Award winner also urged older politicians to retire from politics and promised to exert pressure to remove them from power in the general election next year.
Except for people's accomplishments in the sports, entertainment, and comedy industries, he noted that nothing in Nigeria is worth celebrating.
Wizkid said, “There’s nothing to celebrate in Nigeria, except that Nigerians are amazing people in music, sports, comedy – entertainment in general. I’m proud of young Nigerians doing things around the world in tech. I have amazing friends, doing amazing things.”
He added, “That’s it, though. There’s nothing else. But I feel hopeful there’ll be change. How soon? I’m not sure. But a lot has changed from growing up to now.
“There was a time when you could never speak to the president or anyone in government like that. But now you have a voice.”
According to Premium Times, a day after the Lekki shootings, on October 21, 2020, Wizkid referred to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari as an ineffective failure who is also old.
Before that, the Nigerian President tweeted a supportive message to former US President, Donald Trump and his wife when they tested positive for the coronavirus, and in reaction to that, Wiz said, “Donald Trump is not your business!
“Old man! Police/Sarz are still killing Nigerian youths daily! Do something! Nothing concerns you for America! Face your country!!”
The singer also reminded the Governor of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, of his promise to always look out for the youth.
He wrote, “Mr. Governor! I met with you in December 2019! You expressed how proud you are of the entertainment industry and all we do. Please, do something. Let’s be proud of you, too, abeg! #Endsars!!”
Fighting The Ego
Recently, Wizkid delayed the release of his album, "More Love, Less Ego," in honor of Davido's dead child, Ifeanyi.
The 32-year-old indicated in the interview with The Guardian that, after having four children, he is now more selective about the lyrics he uses because he knows his children are listening.
He stated that the title of his album is a representation of the struggles that individuals face while trying to keep their egos down.
"Everyone fights with their ego, and that’s where I’m at. I’m still trying to shed my ego, like everyone else,” he said of the album title.
Wizkid claimed that, deep down, he is a highly spiritual person who occasionally feels like a pastor despite making a lot of club music.
The singer revealed that he is the youngest of 11 children and the only son of his mother. His father was a Muslim who practiced polygamy and had three wives; his mother was a Christian.
He said that he grew up in Surulere in a “chaotic but fun” family dominated by women.
