IGP, UsmanAlkali Baba.
Nigeria's Police Affairs Minister, Mohammed Dingyadi, on Wednesday, disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Usman Alkali Baba's tenure in office has been extended, in line with the Police Act 2020.
That means the IGP will not be retiring in March as widely speculated.
The Minister said President Muhammadu Buhari has already given the IGP an appointment letter extending his term in office.
Dingyadi clarified while answering questions from journalists on the IGP's tenure, at the end of the first Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting of the year, presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
“I don’t know where you got your record, but let me say that by the provision of the Police Act 2020, the IG is now supposed to have a kind of four-year period and Mr. President has already given him a letter of appointment in that regard.
“So the issue of IG going out during this election period does not arise,” Dingyadi said.
There have been speculations in the media that the IGP who turns 60 years on March 1, 2023, will retire as mandated by the public service rules.
IGP Baba was appointed as the acting Inspector General of Police on April 6, 2021, by President Muhammadu Buhari.
He was confirmed as the substantive Inspector General of Police on June 2021, by the Police Council.
Dingyadi also announced that the government is not building new police training institutions, rather it is concerned with providing legal backing for existing institutions, and therefore the FEC approved a draft bill for an Act to establish Nigeria Police Institutions.
He also maintained that the level of corruption within the Nigeria Police has drastically lessened.
