Seven people including a pregnant woman were killed and 29 others critically injured when a Toyota Camry car lost control on Tuesday and rammed into a crowd of onlookers at the annual Calabar carnival.
Those injured in the accident which occurred in Bogobiri, along the Mary Slessor area include 21 adult males, three adult females, two male children, and three female children.
The remains of the dead have been transferred to morgues, while the injured are currently receiving medical treatment at various hospitals, Vanguard reports.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Maikano Hassan, confirmed the incident on Tuesday night, saying, "The incident occurred when a Toyota Camry car lost control and rammed into a crowd of onlookers during the carnival.
“While the injured are receiving treatment, those who died have been deposited in the morgue of the Naval Hospital and the University of Calabar Teaching hospital.”
Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade has called on security agents to arrest the culprit and directed immediate investigations to ascertain among others how the culprit was able to gain access to the carnival route despite the security barricades that shut it to the public.
In a statement by Christian Ita, Special Adviser on Media and Chief Press Secretary, the governor sympathized with the families of the victims and directed that the bikers parade be stopped immediately to honor the victims.
The Bikers' carnival was part of the Calabar Carnival 2022.
