The FCT Police Command on Friday said it has opened an investigation into the accident involving a train and a car in which a female broadcast journalist was killed.

The victim –identified as Selimota Idowu Suleiman – was a staff of the NTA Channel 5 Abuja and was on her way to her office on Thursday, when a passenger train heading to Abuja from Kaduna state rammed into her car along the Chikakore axis of Kubwa area in the Federal Capital Territory.

Eyewitnesses said the train was a few minutes away from the Kubwa station when the incident occurred, adding that

Suleiman’s car was not fast enough to move away from the rail tracks, Channelstv reports.

The Public Relations Officer for the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adah, in a statement confirmed the incident and said  investigations have started.“The FCT Police Command is aware of the unfortunate incident of rail/motor fatal accident that happened at Chikakore axis in the Kubwa area council of the FCT.”

“Upon receipt of the information, crime scene investigators attached to the Byazin Divisional Police Headquarters drifted swiftly to the scene, took charge of the situation, where the victim was confirmed dead by a medical practitioner on the ground.

“Investigation has commenced by the railway division having jurisdiction over the track. Findings and safety tips already existing will be reiterated to ensure a non-repeat of the incident shortly.”

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) restored the services of the Abuja-Kaduna train at the beginning of December after its services were suspended for several months following the March 28, 2022  attack by Boko Haram on one of the trains covering the route.
