Anambra State government and the state police command have said it is not true that some female students of the
Nnamdi Azikiwe University was raped in the robbery attack on Friday, at some
off-campus hostels of the University.
Some news platforms had reported that gunmen invaded off-campus hostels in Ifite, and raped up to 10 female students while 20 others were injured.
However, a special assistant to the Anambra State governor, Mr. Ejimofor Opara said that none of the victims made such a complaint during his visit to the invaded hostels.
He said, “I was there yesterday (Friday) when the state police commissioner held a meeting with the management of Unizik and the leadership of the SUG.
“We even visited the hostels where some students were attacked and interviewed most of the victims. None of them said anything of rape. How did some journalists come up with that story?”
The Anambra State Police Command also refuted the report. The PPRO Ikenga Tochukwu in a statement said:
“We wish to state that there is no report/record as being peddled by some online media and national dailies tagged “17 persons injured and nine female students raped in a hostel”.
“However, the command not wanting to join issues urge the victims of the incident (if there is any) to come forward with information that will help the Police to embark on investigations.
“Also, members of the public should be guided as serious cases of this nature should be reported to the closest police station than resorting to social media.
"This will enable the police to do preliminary findings before embarking on a proper investigation.
“Given the above, the publication is mischievous/false, unconfirmed, and poised to cause tension and bring the state to disrepute, kindly disregard it.
"The Command also warned the peddlers of this information to desist from it, or will not be spared if apprehended.”
CP's meeting with Unizik management, and SUG leadership.
The Anambra State Police Commissioner, Mr. Echeng Echeng earlier met with UNIZIK management and leaders of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution over the recently increased wave of armed robbery and cultism-related killings within the Ifite-Awka community, where most students of the institution reside.
The Public Relations officer of the state police command, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga spoke about the meeting saying: “Anambra State Police Command, met with the management of Nnamdi Azikwe University, the student union government, and the Commissioner of Homeland Security Affairs.
“The meeting took place in the Vice chancellor’s conference hall at Unizik. The meeting was aimed at addressing the recent security breaches in some of the hostels along Ifite.
“The Commissioner of Police, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP John Obuagbaka noted that the command has since embarked on an intensive patrol, improved operational positioning, and deployment of covert operatives as a solution to the security situation in the area.”
THISDAY reported that resolutions made at the meeting included scheduling a more elaborate meeting with owners of private hostels, presidents of hostels, and other stakeholders within the Ifite community.
