Supporters of the Labour Party governorship candidate for Enugu state, Mr. Chijioke Edeoga have besieged areas around the premises of the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC office, Enugu, insisting that the Labour Party "convincingly" won the governorship election in the state.
The angry supporters who started gathering under their mounted canopies on Monday are pulling their resources together to sustain themselves as they continue to keep vigil around the INEC office, Enugu which has been under a security barricade.
Speaking to Vanguard on the development, on Tuesday, the Director-General of Take Back Enugu for Edeoga Initiative,
Nnamdi Anigbo said they would not leave the area, "until justice takes its course."
“I am here because we want to reclaim our mandate irrespective of the fact that some people thrive in illegality.
“The masses want to do the right thing through their votes; they want Nigeria to be better but, unfortunately, INEC is trying to take Nigerians for granted.
“We are here to show the world that we cannot be cowed.
“This is the second day and we shall be here until justice takes its course. Our resolve is that a new Nigeria is possible. A Nigeria devoid of corruption is possible,” said Anigbo.
Reacting also, Enugu state chairman of LP, Casimir Agbo, said that the vigil was to guard against possible manipulation of results of the election against the party.
Agbo said, "We are here because of the governorship election that PDP is trying to manipulate. We won convincingly in all 17 local government areas.
“We won by more than 11,000 votes. We have seen the results. The only problem is the Nkanu East,” Agbo said.
Agbo further claimed that the Labour Party won in Nsukka but, because the party queried the results from Nkanu East, the PDP in turn raised the issue of Nsukka.
“They have forgotten that during the presidential election, Nsukka gave Obi more than 60,000 votes.
“They raised the Nsukka issue because we raised the issue of Nkanu East,” the LP chairman maintained.
Supporters of the PDP governorship candidate, Mr. Peter Mbah, held a similar protest on Monday demanding that INEC should declare their candidate the winner of the governorship election as he already won the majority of votes from 15 local government areas that were not in contention.
