The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has given the federal government seven days to bring the ongoing naira crises in the country to an end or face mass action, Vanguard reports.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, issued the ultimatum in Abuja while addressing journalists on the outcome of a meeting held by the. NLC Central Working Committee on Monday, March 13, 2023, in the Auditorium of the Congress, Abuja.
Ajaero said Nigerians, especially workers, are finding it increasingly very difficult to go to their workplaces because of the cash crunch, the lingering fuel shortage, and erratic price hikes.
“It is difficult for Nigerian workers to access their hard-earned money in banks and Nigerians are questioning the inability of banks to provide them their money which they were asked to pay into the bank.
“You would also have noticed that it is difficult to see petroleum products. Where you see in some parts of this country, a liter costs as much as N350 and above.
“On the issue of cash crunch, the NLC is giving the federal government of Nigeria and agencies of government, including the Central Bank of Nigeria and other banking institutions seven working days to address the issue of the cash crunch.
Comrade Joe Ajaero, NLC President.
“If they fail to do this at the expiration of the seven days, the congress will direct all workers in the country to stay at home because it has become very difficult to access money to enter vehicles to their workplaces.
“On this issue of fuel, the congress wishes to inform the federal government that we’ll no longer keep quiet on this issue of perennial fuel scarcity and arbitrary increases on petroleum price,” Ajaero warned.
According to a communique issued at the end of the meeting of the NLC Central Working Committee, the body reviewed the fuel supply situation in the country and the resultant erratic costs at filling stations and expressed its sadness at what it views as the nonchalance attitude of the NNPC and the Federal Government to the issue.
The communique, which was jointly signed by NLC President, Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja and posted on the NLC website, stated that the CWC also strongly condemned the "surreptitious increase in electricity tariff without notice and improvement in quality of service," and resolved that going forward, any such increase "would be met with an appropriate response."
