We are not proposing a salary increment for federal workers, Ngige clarifies.

Dr. Chris Ngige, Labour Minister.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, has clarified that the federal government is not planning to increase the salary of federal civil servants, but to pay their allowances in full by January, subject to approval by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Minister who disclosed this on Thursday, while answering questions from journalists said, the government cannot adjust workers' salaries and remunerations on its own without duly consulting and agreeing with the workers union.

He said that paying workers their full allowances is expected to ease the effects of the present economic hardship on workers in the country.

"The idea of paying the allowances to the federal civil servants was muted as part of measures to cushion the effects of the current economic hardship in the country.

“Contrary to speculations that the Federal Government is proposing a salary increase for civil servants, the true position is that the federal civil servants’ allowances would be paid in full as soon as Buhari approves the payment.

The Labour Ministry has tabulated the allowances and sent them to the President for his approval, the minister said.

“Buhari is humane and kind-hearted but those who don’t know him or who are not close to him will think that he is wicked. Having worked closely under him, I can attest to the fact that he is a responsible and trustworthy man.

“This current administration is working very hard to finish strong and needs the support of all Nigerians at this dying minute,” Ngige stated.
