The United States government has warned South Africa that terrorists may be preparing an attack targeted at mass crowds in the country.
Following that, it advised citizens of the United States in South Africa to stay away from huge crowds and gatherings, particularly in the area of Sandton in Johannesburg between October 29 and 30, 2022.
This was announced by the US on its embassy website on Wednesday, emphasizing that it had learned of potential terrorist strikes in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Saturday.
"The US government has received information that terrorists may be planning to conduct an attack targeting large gatherings of people at an unspecified location in the greater Sandton area of Johannesburg, South Africa, on 29 October 2022,” the alert read.
"There is no further information regarding the timing, method, or target of the potential attack.
“The US embassy has advised staff to avoid crowds of people and other large public gatherings in the greater Sandton area of Johannesburg during the weekend of October 29-30 2022.”
The US issued a similar warning to its citizens in Nigeria on Sunday regarding potential terrorist strikes in several regions of the country.
It stated that there is a significant risk of assault on Abuja and that terrorists might target marketplaces, schools, government facilities, and houses of worship.
As a result, the US government has given the go-ahead for the evacuation of its embassy employees and other residents in Nigeria near the capital city, Abuja.
