Dozens of enraged bank customers in Lebanon attacked several banks in the country’s capital Beirut on Thursday,16 February over banks' policy of placing withdrawal limits on citizens’ accounts.

About six banks were attacked and burnt by the protesting depositors, the nigerianweddingblog reports, citing the VOA.

One bank was set on fire in the Badaro neighborhood, but firefighters soon arrived and put it out as riot police holding their shields took positions around the area.

The cash withdrawal policy which started three years ago placed a limit on the withdrawal of U.S. dollars and Lebanese pounds after the country's economy collapsed.

The banks' decision was not backed by any law and has forced depositors to either take recourse to lawsuits to enable them to access their funds in banks or

rob banks with guns to get some money.

So far, the Lebanese currency has lost 97 percent of its value, according to a spokesperson for Depositors Outcry, a lobby group representing depositors whose funds are stuck in the country’s banking sector.

Lebanese authorities said they are working to remedy the situation.

For nearly a year, the country has failed to carry out necessary reforms to secure International Monetary Fund bailout funds.
