Nigeria's president, Mohammadu Buhari.
Nigeria's president Mohammadu Buhari has said he would be happy to retire in the next five months and return to his hometown, Daura in Katsina state, which is at the country's border with Niger republic.
President Buhari said he believed that he would be safe in Daura and far from Abuja and any further problems from anybody.
The president was speaking on Sunday when some residents of the FCT paid him a Christmas homage at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, according to SaharaReporters.
Buhari said, “Thank you very much for taking the time to come and visit me and I congratulate you on this great day (Christmas).
“I have promised a lot of my colleagues that I will try and be as far away as possible from Abuja when I leave the office so that nobody can create any problems for me anymore.
“I will be in Daura, which is on the border with the Niger Republic and I think despite technology, I will be safe enough there.”
The President thanked Nigerians for accepting and supporting him, insisting that he will not stay in office beyond May 29, 2023, and will hand over power to whoever emerges winner of the 2023 presidential election.
“I thank God that before the 2019 elections I went around the whole of the states and in 2003-2011, I went to all the local governments in this country and I thank Nigerians, the people who turned up in every local government were more than what anyone can buy.
“So, I was pleased with the way Nigerians highly treated me and accepted me. In five months, I will happily retire according to the provisions of the constitution of the country and go back home,” Buhari said.
"Just criticize him gently, ”- Sani.
Senator Shehu Sani.
In a related development, former Nigerian lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has mocked President Muhammadu Buhari for saying that he is being “harassed,” by Nigerians.
President Buhari in a documentary entitled “celebrating a patriot, a leader, an elder statesman,” which was screened on Friday night at a private dinner to mark his 80th birthday, complained that his eight years as the president have not been very exciting for him.
Buhari admitted that although he is doing his best, some Nigerians still do not appreciate his hard work, but are rather bent on undermining his administration.
“I believe I’m trying my best, but still my best is not good enough because there are people around that think that they can intimidate me to get what they want instead of going through certain systems to earn whatever they want to earn. And some people want to be clever by half.”
“I wonder if I am going to miss much. I think I’m being harassed,” Buhari stated.
Reacting to President Buhari’s remarks, Senator Sani said, “The President said he is being harassed. Stop harassing him like the way you harassed Presidents Obasanjo, Yar’adua, and Jonathan. Just criticize him gently, mildly, and softly.”
