Peter Obi calls on security agencies to fish out killers of LP candidate in Imo

Peter Obi, Labour Party Presidential candidate.

Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi condemned the murder of Christopher Eleghu, the party's candidate for the Onuimo state constituency, on Friday and called on security agents to uncover the culprits and bring them to justice.

Elehu was killed by yet-to-be-identified gunmen who also set his house and cars on fire and wounded many others.

Obi said: “I am deeply disturbed by the targeted killing of the Labour Party State House of Assembly Candidate for Onuimo LGA in Imo State, Hon. Christopher Eleghu, at his home. His house and cars were reportedly set ablaze.

“I condemn these heinous acts in the strongest possible terms. Such acts violate our spirit of security, civility, and the recently signed Peace Accord. Federal and State security agencies must work assiduously to uncover those behind this killing.”

An eyewitness told reporters that, "He (Eleghu) was attacked with cutlass and his properties set ablaze by the said hoodlums.

They also attacked so many houses and shot sporadically. They injured many and the residents abandoned them.”

The attack comes less than a week after the loss of another candidate of the Labor party in Okigwe, Mr. Chukwunonye Iruno, who was said to have slumped and died in a hospital, on the eve of the Labour Party Presidential rally in Imo state.

Reacting to the development, the Imo state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Micheal Abattam, said: “It is under investigation and the command has sent our men to the area for surveillance and patrol.”
