Peter Obi, LP Presidential candidate.
Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, fought back tears on Thursday, as he narrated his encounter with a jobless Nigerian university graduate while addressing the press on the outcome of the February 25, 2023, presidential election in Nigeria.
It was his first press conference after INEC declared APC's Ahmed Bola Tinubu as the winner of the presidential election and Nigeria's president-elect.
While narrating his encounter earlier the same Thursday with a long-unemployed Nigerian university graduate, Obi couldn't hold back from shedding some bitter and painful tears for Nigeria and the youths.
According to Obi, the young lady was from Nasarawa state and graduated from University in 2018 and has been unable to get a job anywhere since then. Neither did she have the N75.000 Naira she needed to buy an oven to start the bakery business that she learned about.
Obi said: “One thing about me is that I always want to know what young people want. I went somewhere with my Chairman (Labour Party chairman) this afternoon and I needed to boil water for tea. I wanted to do it but she volunteered to do it.
“Along the line, I asked her name, and she told me. She said she’s from Nasarawa and a graduate of Nasarawa State University. About her school, [she] said she schooled in Nasarawa. She said she finished school in 2018 and has no work. I asked her what she was doing here and she said she wanted to bake.
“When I asked why she’s not baking, she said she doesn’t have N75,000 to buy an oven.”
At this point, Obi could no longer hold back tears.
However, that was brief and he continued with the press conference.
