A Catholic priest discovers that a 'woman' whose wedding he nearly officiated was a man, after all.

The real identity of a male pharmacist who lived as a woman in the Rumuolumeni area of River state has been revealed after his death in a tricycle accident.

According to a report by pmnewsnigeria, the pharmacist, whose real name was Emmanuel answered Emmanuella and disguised as a woman while alive.

He was well known as an active female chorister at St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, where he thrilled worshippers with his sonorous voice.

Emmanuel was deceitfully preparing a church wedding, with his male partner having concluded the traditional marriage rites, the report said.

However, on 31 January, he was involved in a fatal tricycle accident on Aka road opposite Liverpool Supermarket, Rumuolumeni, while returning home from the church. He was the only person who died, having sustained serious injuries.

Winnie Omuboba Morganson, a witness confirmed the incident.

“Very true! I was there at the accident scene! She lives on our street in Aker road! We all know him as female even with a tender man’s voice, Omuboba said.

“She has a pharmacy, lives in a two-bedroom apartment alone, and recently bought a Siena car.

She continued, “I got home at almost 11 pm because the police that came refused to take her corpse. We waited. The Catholic Church sent their Women's fellowship bus to pick up the diseased before we left!

“He was deposited as a woman but the mortuary attendant later called the priest and asked again. He said he was a woman, but not until they told Father he was a man.

"His name is Emmanuel but he changed it to Emmanuella. He was from Anambra State,” Omuboba disclosed.

The Catholic Church in a 2021 decree from the Vatican’s doctrine office stipulated that the church cannot bless same-sex unions.

Nigeria has also tightened its laws against homosexuality. The legislation, signed into law by the president unannounced, bans same-sex marriages, gay groups, and shows of same-sex public affection.

The new law recommends prison terms of up to 10 years for anyone who participates in gay clubs or organizations and for same-sex couples who publicly show affection.

"Any person who registers, operates or participates in gay clubs, societies, and organizations or directly or indirectly makes public show of same-sex amorous relationship in Nigeria commits an offense and shall each be liable on conviction to a term of 10 years in prison," the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act says.

Gay rights activists had expressed concerns about the tightening of the laws.
